About the Artist:
Andrew Warhola (Pittsburgh, August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987), better known as Andy Warhol, was an American visual artist and filmmaker who played a key role in the birth and development of pop art. After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol gained international fame with his work in painting, avant-garde film, and literature — a fame bolstered by his savvy media presence and status as a cultural icon.

He bridged the worlds of artists and intellectuals, but also aristocrats, queer communities, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians, and eccentric city figures. His influences included Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom of Finland, and Jack Smith.

Warhol employed a wide variety of media in his work, including hand drawing, painting, engraving, photography, screen printing, sculpture, film, and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, houses an extensive permanent collection and is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.

Throughout his life, Warhol was a controversial figure — some critics saw his work as pretentious or tongue-in-cheek. Since his death in 1987, he has been the subject of numerous retrospectives, analyses, books, and documentaries. Regardless of fame or criticism, he is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century due to his groundbreaking contributions.
